Growing up, he had his first pro bout at the age of 16, which he won with knockout kick to his opponent's head. He went on to wrestle for the Canadian national team and studied Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Nova Uniao, paving the way for his MMA career. Since then, he developed impressive skills in Muay Thai and boxing as well. He is particularly fond of takedowns, relishing in ground, pound, and submission once his opponent is down.
He came to the UFC in 2002, where he notched up 7 straight wins, starting with a unanimous decision against Karo Parisyan in UFC 46, until being humbled in 2004 in his first shot at an MMA title by Matt Hughes. Never one to be dissuaded, though, he bounced back with another 6 straight wins, including another shot at Matt Hughes, this one which he won by knockout, earning him his long-sought-after title. His championship reign was short-lived, however, as it was claimed from him in his first title defense by Matt Serra.
He gave up pursuing a secondary education in administration for a career in MMA fighting. He cites Randy Couture as his MMA hero. But St. Pierre is an MMA hero in his own right, as both the former TKO Canadian Welterweight champion and former UFC World Welterweight champion.
As of this writing, his overall MMA record is 16-2-0.
