GSP Vs. Hughes at UFC 79: Nemesis

Well with the recent back injury to Matt "the terra" Serra looks like Matt Hughes's old nemesis Georges St. Pierre is back in line for a title shot.  Even though GSP is taking the fight on short notice he doesn't plan on having any problems making weight or getting set for a rematch with Hughes.

GSP is coming off a loss to Serra, which was immediately following his somewhat upset win over Hughes for the Middleweight UFC title.  The fight now will not officially be for the middleweight belt, but instead will be for the interim title and the winner getting a shot at Serra some time next year, assuming Serra can come back.

However, Hughes vs. St. Pierre is not the only main event happening at UFC 79.  Chuck Liddel will be taking on Wanderlei Silva in a long awaited fight.  The 2 fighters have fought in parallel over their careers while both in Pride and UFC, but have never faced each other.  While this fight would have been a mega fight 2 years ago when it was first hinted at by the UFC, it has lost some luster since both fighters are coming off back to back losses.  Liddel has gone down to Rampage Jackson and Keith Jardin this year, while Silva lost his last 2 fights before Pride was bought out by the Ultimate Fighting Championships.

The winner of this fight will be sure to be in line for a shot at the light heavyweight title some time next year for one last run at glory in the mixed martial arts world.  The loser may well put the gloves up or have to settle for undercard fights for the twighlight of this career.
